Sowing
Sow in spring in warm soil: 5 to 10 days when warm and 10 to 21 days when cool (Iowa State). Seedlings sown by about two months before frost usually bloom the following summer.
Care and transplanting
Stake tall spikes. Hollyhock is a biennial that often behaves as a perennial through self-sowing.
Problems
Rust shows as orange spots under leaves; remove and bin them.
Saving seed
Collect dry seed from spent heads; it self-sows freely.
