Cherry from seed
Prunus avium and P. cerasus
- Sowing depth
- about 1 in (25 mm)
- Light
- Cover the seed; darkness helps
- Before sowing
- Cold-moist stratification: varies from about 4 weeks to more than 14; sour cherry 90 to 150 days at 33 to 41°F.
Sowing
Clean the pits, keep them damp and cold for the whole chill, then sow in spring or sow outdoors in autumn (Oklahoma State).
Care and transplanting
Cherries need a different tree for pollination in many varieties and seedlings will not match the parent.
Problems
Pits that dried out do not recover. Mice love buried pits; protect with mesh.
Saving seed
Keep pits moist from the moment you remove the flesh.
