Sowing
Seed is fine and needs light: surface-sow into trays 8 to 10 weeks before planting out (Johnny's, Iowa State) and cover only enough to hold it in place.
Care and transplanting
Pinch seedlings for branching. Plants tolerate light frost; NDSU transplants them about 2 weeks before the last frost.
Problems
Slow, tiny seedlings are normal for the first month. Keep the surface just moist.
Saving seed
Collect the rattling seed pods when dry; hybrids do not come true.
