Sowing
Light is needed: do not cover seed (Iowa State). Germination takes 10 to 20 days from fresh seed and up to 4 weeks from older seed. Sow 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost.
Care and transplanting
Plants flower the second year. Do not overwater seedlings.
Problems
Leaf miners squiggle leaves; cut back and bin the foliage.
Saving seed
Collect black seed from dry pods; columbines cross-pollinate.
