- Light
- Cover the seed; darkness helps
- Before sowing
- Soak seed overnight in warm water; do not eat the seeds or leaves (they are toxic, only the root is edible).
No tested germination table was found for jicama; treat the guidance as general and check your supplier.
Sowing
Jicama needs a long, hot season, around 5 months or more. Start seed indoors in a warm place and plant out only when it is hot; in short summers it is not worth growing outdoors.
Care and transplanting
Give it a trellis, keep it warm and pinch off flowers so energy goes into the root.
Problems
Small roots mean not enough summer. The foliage and pods are poisonous; keep away from children and pets.
Saving seed
Seed needs a full, long season to mature.
